Rav Avigdor Miller on Leaving Eretz Yisroel Q: There is a statement in the Gemara that “Anyone who lives outside of Eretz Yisroel it’s as if he has no G-d” (Kesuvos 110b). Can you explain that to me? A: The statement, “Anyone who does not live in Eretz Yisroel is like he has no Hashem,” you have to know that it’s a maamar of agadata, it’s a figure of speech. And it doesn’t mean today – it means in the times when Eretz Yisroel was the place of Torah. When a man lives in a place of Torah, in a place of kedusha, and he leaves that place and goes someplace else, so it’s like losing part of his closeness to Hashem. A: Now, it’s not my place here to deprecate or belittle our great national heroes. I believe that we should honor them. Born: Yerushalayim, Eretz Yisrael, 1724 Died: Livorno, Italy, 1806 Popularly known as the CHIDAH, the abbreviation of Chaim Yosef David Azulai. Halachist, Kabbalist, historian and bibliographer. The Chida was one of the most fascinating and multi-faceted figures in Jewish history. Born in Jerusalem he became a scholar of the first rank and wrote classic works in halacha such as Shaar Yosef, Birkei Yosef and Machzik Beracha. He studied under Rabbi Chaim Ben Atar (Ohr HaChaim), becoming his closest and most devoted follower. However, those sublime days were cut short when, after less than a year, the Ohr Hachaim passed away. After finishing all he could learn in the revealed part of Torah he turned to learning its mystical secrets of Kabbalah with R' Shalom Sharabi.
